Review: Starting An Avon Online Business

Can You Have Business Success Online With Avon?

Product: Avon starting an avon business

Founder: David H. McConnell – The Company was founded back in the 1890’s!

Price to join: 0 dollars, but it would be encouraged to spend $15 for the company’s “Starter Kit”.

Avon: Perhaps the most successful company having to do with the sale of women’s products in history!

When one says the word “Avon” the immediate image formed inside our heads would be the many products related to women’s make-up, fragrances, fashion and bath/body that have become popular worldwide for decades.  In fact as was stated above, the Avon Company has been around for one hundred and twenty five years now, or dating back to the 1890’s when it was founded by David H. McConnell.

As this site is devoted towards promoting ideals surrounding the ability for an individual to generate income online, either through a legit business or working from home, I am going to try and analyze by the conclusion of this article just how effectively a person could have a profitable business online promoting Avon and their products.

****If selling women’s products is not exactly your cup of tea, as an alternative I will now mention My Top Recommendation for learning how to generate income for yourself online that is with a program called Wealthy Affiliate. ****

Avon and its similarities to Amway:

The Avon Company is very similar to one that I reviewed recently called Amway.  Amway around since 1959 also has a superb reputation worldwide as having reputable and popular products that long have been part of the company’s portfolio for years.

Amway originally was known however for its excellence by way of home/cleaning products.  Later on this company branched out to women’s beauty product as well as those regarding health/dietary/ and weight loss.

Like Amway, the Avon Company for years has also created an opportunity for people around the world to own a business promoting products acting as independent affiliates.  Whereas at Amway such an individual affiliate business owner was referred to as an “Independent Business Owner”, or IBO; at Avon such a person is simply a “representative”.

It’s the same ideal, at Avon being a “representative”, means that you work as an affiliate with your own business promoting their line of products.

My Mom, who also later got involved with my Dad briefly with Amway in the early 1980’s, I can also vaguely remember sold Avon products briefly in the mid to late 1960’s.  I have no specific recollections as to how well she did in her business, (by 1968 I was still only 10 going on 11 years old) and as she is now deceased I cannot ask her.  I can distinctly remember all of the Avon products that she had in our small house.

All I do know is that as an African-American woman, (her primary career being first a pediatric nurse later to change to a large industrial health care nurse at Pratt & Whitney aircraft) our family lived then in a town that was at least 95% or more Caucasian.

I can only assume that my mom, only looking to supplement her income probably sold Avon products to her relatives, or our neighbors who did respect her as being a very friendly woman.  Plus she  probably cultivated some business with members of her church as at the time we did attend an African-American church.

Avon’s line of products:

Avon has long been known for its line of products surrounding make-up, bath/body and fragrance.  But the company also very much has its hands on products surrounding jewelry, women’s clothing fashions, hair styling, home, and now this includes kids and men’s products as well.

Avon and Breast Cancer Awareness

In 2003 the Avon foundation launched its annual “Avon Walk for Breast Cancer”.  Since that time through 2013, participants in the event, which consists of a 2 day, 39.3 mile walk, (the equivalent of a marathon and a half) have walked collectively a combined 6.25 million miles.

That represents a distance, mentioned on Avon’s site as circumnavigating Planet Earth more than 259 times.  More than 14,000 breast cancer survivors themselves have participated in this annual event.

So how does one become an Avon representative? starting an avon business

As indicated on this page, in order to become an Avon representative all you would have to do is fill out a form answering very basic questions.

More than 6 MILLION people worldwide through the years have been affiliated with Avon as being representatives, selling the company’s products. This alone would tell you that Avon as a company is indeed legitimate.

By registering as a representative you would immediately have the option to be matched up with a “veteran” representative who could guide you on how to start up your business.  While not mandatory, it would be suggested that for $15 you purchase the starter kit.  As was the case with Amway, you then would go about promoting Avon’s line of products by giving away free samples to family, friends and others in the hopes of eventually having them as customers in your business.

But what about building an online business?

Avon in its FAQ section does address the concept for a representative building up her, (or “his” as males would not be turned away from this venture) business online.  As seen on the page, Avon mentions such social media tools as Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, etc. as means for promoting your business.

I would only guess that it would be to your benefit if upon joining Avon as a representative that you would be matched up with a “veteran” who would give you more ideas along the way to help you to grow your online business.  Nothing is mentioned about creating your own website as a marketing tool for promoting your business online.   I do not see any training with that very important concept as addressed anywhere on Avon’s website.

The one difference that I detected between Amway and Avon is that the former, (Amway) appeared to have methods for an IBO, (Independent Business Owner) through strategies that appeared to be MLM practices – although legit because it was NOT a pyramid scheme.

Avon appears to be nothing like that at all with its set-up.  If you want to act as a representative in promoting products through your business, the percentage of your earnings under a contract set up with the company would go to you – not someone else.

Here is a YT video which explains of the benefits you can grow in your business being a representative with Avon:

I do love the idea that in no way does Avon promote the idea that this is a get rich quick scheme.  Only through effort that you put into your business in the long term would it possibly yield the type of financial success that you could achieve.

Avon is without question NOT a scam, as has been the case with other companies that I have reviewed at this site.  Avon does not have its business model built as a pyramid scheme.

Final thoughts: Training in running an Avon business online – Frankly it could be better!

My only problem with Avon has to do with training were one to pursue this as an online business.  Other than the ideals around promoting the business through social media platforms, very little else apparently is available by way of training.  This is similar to my one complaint about Amway which I reviewed previously at this site.

Of course it would be possible for you to go out on your own to find the tools to build a website.  However this would include also buying both a registered domain name plus having someone hosting/providing technical support for your site!  This would definitely mean money, $$$, coming out of your budget in running this type of business.

You would also need to find out how to learn educationally in writing content articles for this website – including keyword research and SEO all crucial elements for getting your site ranked highly online as you attempt to market your online business.  Avon seems to lack any real training, at least from what I see visibly mentioned on their site having to do with this ideal.

So Is There A Better Online Program Out There? YES!

Okay so you have seen my thoughts about Avon.  Yes you could build up a profitable business being a representative of this company.  However you might now be asking yourself if there is a better program out there surrounding the ideal of creating a solid level of income for yourself online.

Instead as an alternative option, I again present a much more legit program that would allow you to make money online as it is with a company called Wealthy Affiliate.

This company, first created back in 2005, has had over a million people worldwide who at one time or another all have been members of this organization. Starting An Avon Online Business

Wealthy Affiliate provides the best level of educational training, tools and community support that would allow a serious individual to achieve whatever would be his/her personal goals in creating income online.

Wealthy Affiliate most definitely is NOT a get-rich quick scheme, so no, you will not have earned $20,000 some 10 days from now should you decide to join this organization.

Take advantage of what this opportunity can do for you, especially if you’re seeking extra income for you and your family.

  1. I have considered starting this Avon business thing for a long time now but am so glad I read your review as it has made me think about various topics wouldn’t have otherwise.

Of course, anyone with any intelligence knows you have to work hard, but the limited info regarding training and expanding the business is definitely something I would look more into before signing up! Although, that being said Avon is a good brand to sell all around. Thank you for the info 🙂

  2. HI Holly! Thank you for both reading the article and afterwards issuing your thoughts. I by no means consider Avon to be a business opportunity that you must avoid. Millions of people across the globe have had success promoting the company’s line of products. Being that it is 2016 and well into the age of the Internet and having a profitable online business, I just question with the apparent lack of training and education related to this specific ideal how successful one could be starting such a business on the Internet. Other than the fact that the company encourages a representative to promote through social media I saw no other types of training – website creation, training in content article writing, SEO, keywords etc. that one would have to really know how to do well in order to create a successful business with that ideal. One simply nowadays expect to truly create a successful business simply by knocking on neighbor’s doors or calling friends in the hopes that they will buy products that you are promoting. That is so 1960ish and completely outdated!

Thank you again Holly for your thoughts! Best wishes to you if you’re pursuing a business for yourself. And by all means consider what I propose near the bottom of my article review with Wealthy Affiliate: http://generateincomeonlinenoscams.com/my-1-recomm

    Sincerely,

  3. Jeff,

Thanks for your honest take on starting an Avon business. I’m quite familiar with the company myself as my mom was involved with it for decades. I believe she used to have a little Avon business going, but has since moved on to a large extent. She still orders Avon products regularly. I think she’ll appreciate the insights you provide here — I’ll send her the link. Thanks again!

  4. Hi Paul! Thank you for both reading the article and also for issuing your thoughts. Avon indeed does have its merits regarding the possibility of one’s having a successful business. The fact that as you said your own Mom has been with the company in the past as a representative indicates that many people all over the world did this same venture – as did my mother back in the mid-late 1960’s as I discussed in the article. Thank you also for your willingness to share the link of my review of Avon with your Mom.

    Sincerely,

    Jeff

  5. I knew a girl in the late 90’s that took on an avon job in our local area and we all thought she was completely mad but we were soon eating our words. She ended up doing it for several years and had a great lifestyle through it – basically worked when she wanted and made good money!

  6. Chris thank you for your comment! Avon indeed has been around for a very, very long time. Anyone claiming that the company is a fraud would be someone that did not know what the heck he/she is talking about!

    Jeff
